Just a little disappointed…

17 09 2010

At some point last year, due to a bit of a conflict between various athletic groups/organizations/coordinators, TKD (tae kwon do) practice got moved from 6-8ish to 8-10ish. At the end of last year, we were informed that we’d probably end up with the same (later) time this year. However, just this evening, i got an email: Practice is moving earlier. This news comes after both Pass 1 and Pass 2 (opportunities to sign up for classes) and in the middle of open registration (ie, when all class sections one might need are full). TKD practice now happens to fall smack on top of my physics discussion. (the one i picked so it WOULDN’T conflict). The only section that would work out with my schedule is closed (ie, i can’t switch into it without asking the professor and being very, very lucky). Needless to say, i’m not too happy about this. TKD is one of the few outlets i have, and makes an incredibly good counter to all the brain-work i am (and will be) drowning in the rest of the time.

In other, more neutral news, housemate #3, Edith, moved in today. We thought she was coming tomorrow, but she showed up at the door today, a complete surprise. So far, it seems to be going well. She and Kat figured out how to set up their room to have a LOT more free space (i’m considering stealing their floorplan, it was so amazing). Edith is the loud, cheerful one, so put together with my moody, sulking, silent disposition, it should be an interesting year.

Today: lots of surprises, some bad, some not so bad. May life get better and not worse….

Back to School

15 09 2010

Yes, it’s been awhile. This is mainly intended to be a school-year blog, since there’s not much to say about summer: Umm… i went back to toga, i slept, i ate food….. not the most fascinating of subjects.

However, this isn’t Saratoga anymore. As of September 11th, i am officially residing in my apartment in Davis. One of my housemates moved in yesterday, the other housemate will be coming on the 17th, and my roomate will be here on the 18th. There’s four of us, all girls. Two bedroom, one bathroom (and may we not regret it). Moving in was a bit stressful; my parents and i don’t get along for extended periods of time in small spaces (ie a car filled with stuff). By the end of the day, i pretty much kicked them out the door and told them not to come back (sorry mum and dad… i’ve calmed down a bit now >.>).  I managed to cook for myself without lighting anything on fire or getting food poisoning (definitely a plus) and made black bean soup for myself, my housemate, her boyfriend Chris, and another friend of ours. It went over well, to my great relief.

The apartment itself is pretty nice. There are some issues with the management (particularly in terms of tracking down certain packages and getting repairs done), so i don’t think most of the group that decided to move here will be staying after this year, but for now it’s not bad. We’re right next to a lake, so i’m trying to find out how to get to it. I think one has to join the country club, which should be interesting; i’m not exactly the country club type!

Anyway, more later as more happens. Hope everyone is doing well and i’d love to hear from you all!

ps. Yes, i am dating the same guy. (His name is Alex). No, we’re not living together. I like my roomate too much. XD

Brownies? More like burnies…

23 05 2010

Having a pan, a mixing bowl, measuring cup, oil, brownie mix, and access to an oven, I made brownies. usually, when i make brownies, they’re GOOD. Like, disappear within a couple days good (even if it’s not just my family’s opinion). This time there were a few complications.

1. I’m used to working with a temperamental oven; it heats unevenly back-to-front and almost always takes longer than one thinks it should(it’s probably not the temperature it claims). The oven in the dorms is much nicer; it has a display to tell you what the temperature is, it bakes evenly, and it actually heats up completely.

2. The pan. Reading the instructions this morning, i found “2. Set oven temperature 25 (F) 13(C) lower than specified in recipe or mix directions.

I preheated the oven to the recommended temperature, waited until it was ready, then put my brownies in for a time corresponding to the upper end of the suggested time. The result:

well, they’re brown. nothing lit on fire. they’re slowly disappearing, but mostly because they’re better  sucked on than chewed quickly and therefore good study snacks.

lesson learned: watch out for things that work.

Mystery Solved

16 05 2010

This shirt has been around for awhile…. i don’t actually remember where it’s from, but i suspect it has something to do with my grandparents (on mum’s side), so if anyone wants to fill me in on the story, i’d love to hear it.

This shirt: faded, light blue with dark blue around the neck and sleeves. Little guy on the front waving with a big smile. text says ‘mita kuuluu?’  (the a has two dots over it).   What does it mean? So far, who knows. Not even sure what language it’s in.

Today: google translate.   Enter: m-i-t-a-  -k-u-u-l-u-u.  Select language: detect language. Translate to: English. Language (autodetect): Finnish. Translation: How are you doing? Mystery: solved.

So that’s it… pretty much, ‘what’s up’. About what i’d guessed, and not a bad thing to have on a shirt. Still, though, it was a little too easy…far to quick a conclusion to a childhood mystery.

*shrug* such is life. now i guess i can ask,

mita kuuluu?

Long time no talk

10 05 2010

So… it’s been awhile. I haven’t been posting because it seems that i’ve been perpetually busy or too ticked off, so sorry for the delay!

I did manage to pass math last quarter, with a solid C+ (rather ashamed that i could be happy about a C). Chem… well, the time spent studying for the math final was taken out of chem, so the final dropped me down to a B, not nearly as well as I should have done. The rest of my classes went well;  i miss asian american studies already.

This quarter, I’m taking calculus 21c (reputed to be nearly the hardest of the four), chemistry 2c, engineering 6, and communications. To keep myself sane, i’m also taking a few pe classes.

Calculus is hard (right now i have a C WITH the curve) but i actually really like the teacher, and i’ve started going to office hours, so i’m enjoying the class a lot. Chemistry…. i probably shouldn’t get started, but i will anyway. My teacher doesn’t like the textbook, so instead he wants us to use an online textbook of sorts called chemwiki. It’s similar to wikipedia,  a relatively open resource. Any student in his class can write or edit one of the articles/sections for extra credit. Unfortunately, this means people do. And, being students, they get things wrong. I find the thing impossible to study from, between the poor command of the english language (the worst is from american-born, not international transfers, interestingly enough) to the glaring factual errors. Our second midterm is on friday, so i’m going to have to drag through it, counterbalanced heavily with the textbook, since i desperately need to do well. On the first midterm, i miscounted the number of electrons in copper and consequently got an entire 20-point question wrong (5 parts, 3-4 points each, no partial credit. yes, no partial credit… even though the questions were answerable by more than one part and each depended on the last). After the midterm i’m going to go… discuss…. some of my concerns with the teacher, and after the final i fully intend to outline them more fully to the head of the department. The professor himself is completely disorganized, but it’s really the lack of a dependable resource that i have issues with.

Moving on… (see why i shouldn’t have started on chemistry? )  engineering6 is actually mostly about using a particular software (?) called matlab. The class is at 8am, which i’m not too happy about, but the software…. i love it. It is without question one of the most amazing things i have ever encountered. It can do pretty much anything mathematical you could possibly imagine, and it’s used by writing scripts (programs that tell it what to do). The whole programming thing is completely new to me, so i was expecting to be thoroughly lost, but i’m finding it incredibly fun. Of course, that doesn’t mean i never sit here and swear at my computer screen when i can’t figure out what’s wrong with my program, but overall it’s turned out to be one of the awesomest things this year.

Communications… i’ll keep it brief. Communications 1 (public speaking) is a major requirement for all engineers (apparently they think we need some help talking to people. I’d object, but that would require communicating…. >.> ). Me? I’m not good at public speaking. I hate the class. I’m doing my best, but i’ll be very glad when it’s over.

To lighten the academic load a little, i’m taking archery, tai chi, and meditation. Tai chi is proving to be a bit challenging, since i have a memory like a leaky bucket, and can’t remember the movements from one class to the next. (in case you’re not sure what it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tai_chi_chuan). Archery is fun, but i seem to lack any sort of natural talent. So far, i’ve managed to to miss the target with at least one arrow in each end (6 arrows; we shoot about 4 ends a class, twice a week), lose an arrow, and bend my bow inside out. I’m surprised they haven’t kicked me out yet, but i’m determined to improve.   Meditation i’m taking from somewhere outside UCDavis, at a meditation center (?) in downtown Davis. The thing that probably surprised me most about the class is how much of it i was already doing/had worked out on my own. I definitely like having the opportunity to take an hour or so at least once a week that CAN’T be interrupted, just to slow down and exist for a bit.

My future housemates and i FINALLY signed our lease (possibly more details on the drama later, if you’re interested), so we officially have a place for the next year. There will be four of us (all female), two bedrooms, 1bath. I’m staying with niamh, my current roomate, and the two girls in the other room are also from our building. It should be interesting. One housemate is fairly religous, and one likes to poke fun at religion (naming no names). We’re also a 20-minute ride from campus, which i’m not too happy about, but niamh wanted to live there and i’d rather have her than a short trip (she puts up with me amazingly well).

That’s all for now, since i have to get up at 7am tomorrow morning. Hope everything is going well, and please keep me posted. I might not always reply, but i love to hear from you guys!

Spring Quarter Begins

1 04 2010

I know, I know, I haven’t put anything up recently >.>

It’s been busy. Finals were a couple weeks ago, so I had been studying madly for calculus (due to a bit of difficulty earlier in the quarter, passing the class was…. under question). The rest of my finals went decently, and I dragged myself back to Saratoga for spring break on Saturday afternoon after my last final. (Yes, a final on Saturday).

Unfortunately, the confusion did not end there. Because I wasn’t sure if I had passed MAT21B (the current class), I didn’t want to drop the section of 21B i had registered for, but I also needed to add a section of 21C (the next class in the set), which i couldn’t do without dropping the 21B section. (if you think this is confusing, you are absolutely correct). I couldn’t straighten out the situation until I got my final grade from 21B….which arrived early Monday morning, allowing me to rearrange my schedule at 7am and avoid 2 calculus classes every MWF and a 10minute sprint across campus those same days. Luckily, it all worked out.

Now for the fun bits!

So far, spring quarter looks like it should be interesting. I don’t have to take an Integrated Studies class, which is a bonus (all the prior Integrated Studies classes were, I felt, rather a waste of time and unpleasant). I am, however, taking COMM001 (Introduction to Public Speaking). Apparently they want engineers to be able to communicate to other human beings. o.O strange. At any rate, it will be…. interesting. Besides Communications, I’m taking Calculus 21C (which will be challenging, but i like the professor), Chemistry 2C (also challenging), and ENG006 (Engineering six). ENG006 is an interesting class. The point of the class is to work on problem-solving methods, but the main objective is to learn how to use a software called MATLAB. We will be programming, which worries me a little; it seems like more than half the people in my discussion section already know loads about it, while i have no clue. If i can keep up, though, it should be fun. Alex helped me install MATLAB, so we both got to look at some of the demos and a little peek at what it did. I have to admit, even without knowing anything about 90% of what it can do, i was almost drooling at the screen.

Speaking of Alex…. I got to hang out with him on Sunday evening, so that was really nice, especially since I hadn’t seen him for a week.  :)

I hope everything is going well with everyone, let me know how you’re doing! Best wishes to all.

Happy New Year!

14 02 2010

No, I am not confused. Today is lunar new years (ie Chinese new year, ie Seollal (Korean), ie Tet (vietnamese)). Because this is also a three day weekend, UC Davis is rather empty. Many of the Asian kids are home with their families for new years, and everyone else is off skiing or home for the weekend. Me? I’m here. As usual. I don’t really mind, though… the quiet is rather nice, and i managed to accomplish something rather impressive: I cleaned my room to spotlessness. I’ll give some of you a few seconds to revive yourselves before repeating that…. I cleaned my room. Niamh’s areas are still a little disorganized, but mine are spotless.  Pretty much, I came home at 3 yesterday and cleaned until 11:50. No breaks, nothing. Every single thing  I own has been washed, the bed is made, I vacuumed, and there’s nothing lying around on the floor. Why? Well, it has a little to do with a calculus test. More specifically, a calculus test that I flunked (59%). In order to keep my scholarship, priority registration, etc, I need a 3.25 GPA (ie. much higher than flunking). Looking at that score made me realize i need to kick it up a notch and get serious. So,  i borrowed a holiday, and decided

New year, new start.

Therefore, a clean room to start off with. It’s both symbolic and practical; less distraction, and less risk of breaking an ankle trying to get to class in the morning.  Hopefully, it pays off. If i can keep it this way until Alex gets back, i’ll try and steal his camera and post some pictures of this momentous occasion.

In earlier news, I got to go to the Sacramento Tet festival yesterday. (Tet = Vietnamese new year) I went with a group i’ve been working with a bit, so i spent most of the time convincing people to fill out surveys. It was actually pretty fun. Most of the people I talked to spoke English quite well, and the one person who didn’t understood my partner’s translations (win!). I also got yummy food, so that was great fun! Even aside from the food, it wasn’t anything i’ve really seen before, so watching the performances was pretty cool.

New year is supposed to be spent with family, so I called up my parents this morning (also just to say hi) since i couldn’t actually be in Saratoga. I would have talked to other relatives, too, but i don’t have anyone’s phone numbers. Also, i’m lazy. XD

Speaking of asian cultures… I’ve been having a bit of an adventure lately trying to meet dress codes. Working with the group I mentioned above, I’m required to wear something called an ao dai (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/Mot_so_kieu_ao_dai_le_hoi.JPG) for certain events. The group has some to loan out, but i’m a little bigger than most of the people there. Scratch that, i’m bigger than every single one of the girls and the majority of the guys. Therefore, I  couldn’t borrow one, and I had to / have to find my own. Clearly, I don’t have the contacts to do this. It’s been a bit of a dilemma. Luckily, Dad found a website that sells them, so now i just have to decide which one I want to get. That’s almost harder, they’re all so lovely! Still, it’s  a  relatively pleasant dilemma to have.

So, in general, all is well here. Hope everyone is doing well, let me know what’s up and how everything’s going! I love hearing from everyone. ^_^

Chuc Mung Nam Moi! (Happy new year!)
